Title: Buffalo, I'm Not

Title: Buffalo, I'm Not

Description:  Contrary to the song "Home on the Range," buffalo do not roam in the American West. Instead, they are indigenous to South Asia (water buffalo) and Africa (Cape buffalo), while bison are found in North America and parts of Europe. Hence, I titled this photo "Buffalo, I'm Not." In North America, these massive animals are correctly referred to as bison, although the term "buffalo" is often used colloquially (myself included in the past). Bison, weighing up to 2,000 pounds and capable of reaching speeds of 40 miles per hour, primarily feed on grasses and sedges year-round. During blizzards, when the plains are blanketed with deep snow, bison utilize their heads as makeshift plows, pushing aside the accumulation to access forage below. The distinctive hump on their backs aids in this process, consisting of powerful muscles supported by long vertebrae, allowing them to shift vast amounts of snow as they swing their heads from side to side.

"Buffalo, I'm Not" is part of the Limited Edition Collection: Into the Wild - Intimate Encounters.
